Real bodies photo shoot - Nicky
In February I started by real bodies photo shoot with the theme #goddessofthemorning. My first subject is my beautiful friend Niki. Niki is someone who I literally have shared blood sweat and tears with (yes blood too). Niki used to be my gym partner and she kept me going at a time when I really needed to stay focused on my path. She always supports and encourages. She is a confident woman who gets things done. I am very blessed to call her my friend.
Please tell us a little about yourself?
I am a lover, a wife and a mother and my family is of utmost importance to me. I have been married for 34 years to the most amazing man, who accepts me for who I am and loves me unconditionally. I have always made sure that I put myself first, not in a selfish way,in the organisation of my family unit. My husband is second on the list and next, our two gorgeous sons. I realized early on in my marriage, that I have to take care of me first, so that I can then take care of my family, as they say, "happy wife, happy life"
What does body positivity mean to you?
If you don't/can't love yourself, how can you love anyone else.
If you could tell your younger self one thing in terms of self love and acceptance, what would it be?
Don't compare yourself to anyone else, you are unique. Admire positive traits in others and surround yourself with people that will help you to grow into a better version of yourself. Looks are only skin deep, and as we all know, beauty can be bought.
What was the best body positive message ever given to you?
Own your body, it belongs to you alone, it does not belong to anyone else. Remember, we are a sum of lots of parts, the body and how it looks, is just a small part of the total person.
Do you ever try to speak positively about the way you look?
Do you have any words of encouragement for women or young girls who may deal with shaming of their body type? Or even something you, yourself may still need to be told?
True beauty, comes from within, we are all beautiful in our own way and nobody is ever ugly. What we think and believe, we become. Don't allow negative thoughts or people's negative opinions of you, control you. You are in control of how you react.
To conclude, complete the following: I will love my body more positively by…
taking care of it, physically, mentally and spiritually.
