How are you living?
Nelson Mandela was once asked during an interview what he was doing with his time all those years that he spent in prison. His answer: “I was preparing”. Of course he was preparing! Can you imagine what a disappointment he would have been to mankind if he was not preparing to become one of the greatest leaders this world has ever seen?
Even though he was totally justified, who would he have been if he let blame, bitterness and hatred take hold of his heart? What would have happened had he allowed himself to become a jailbird with a victim mentality? Do you think for one moment he would have been the man he was if he didn’t use all those years to prepare to do his greatest work in the last 2 decades of his life?
Sitting in a prison cell on an island, looking up through the small window at the stars at night, how many people would have believed in that moment that the world could change for them in the most spectacular way? How many people can look at such a hopeless situation with different eyes, buckle down and start preparing for the dream that is living only in their mind’s eye?
This simple yet profound story affirmed to me the fact that you always have a choice in life - everyday and in every circumstance. You can choose to wallow in pain and misery, you can get despondent when things seem to turn for the worse, you can talk along with all your friends when they say the world is going to the dogs OR you can see everything unfolding in your life as divine preparation for your greatest work.
Though I think it takes an exceptionally strong character to keep standing when the world seems to have forgotten you, when things seems hopeless and everyone around you is in despair, I believe that there are millions of us who are ready to live a heart-centered life. It takes courage to go against everything that your mind is trying to tell you about the world and your situation and follow your heart’s wisdom to something more beautiful and more meaningful than what you have right now.
Are you ready to start living wholeheartedly? I know you want to.
